Samsung Galaxy S Upgrade Steps
For the Samsung Galaxy S, it is recommended to proceed with the upgrade via the usage of Samsung Kies. There is a very good resource (with screenshots) on the upgrade steps at:

It is highly recommended that all appropriate backup be completed first prior to executing the upgrade.
For a better illustration of the upgrade process you may wish to refer to the video below:
HTC Desire Upgrade Steps:
As always, prior to the upgrade, please do ensure that the appropriate backup has been completed.
In order to make sure of that, you may wish to follow the steps below to check whether automatic backup is on or off.- From the Home screen, press MENU, and then tap Settings.
- Scroll down the screen, and then tap Privacy > Back up my data & settings.
- Select the Back up my data & settings check box to turn automatic backup on (if not already done so)
- From the Home Screen, press Menu > Settings > About phone > System software update > Check now.
- Once prompted, download the update and make sure you’re doing it over Wi-Fi rather than 3G as it will be much faster.
- The whole process will take around 10-15 minutes or so and your phone will reboot itself a few times and restore all your personal settings that it should have backed up onto your microSD card.
- Once the upgrade has been completed, verify the software version by going to Menu > Settings > About phone. Then scroll down the screen for the software version. It should indicate that the software version is Android 2.2.
